Do you read?
I’m not going to get started on a previous rant about the fact that you can’t call yourself a writer if you don’t read – so don’t worry.
In case you haven’t noticed – we are living in the technological age. (Okay – if you’re reading my blog, I’ll accept the fact you’re probably up on your technological gadgets!) So, how does technology change your reading habits?
Do you read the paper everyday – online? Or do you still prefer to pick up and feel the newsprint beneath your fingers?
How often to you spend hours walking around the bookstore? Or do you prefer to download your favorite author’s latest book onto your phone, your E-Reader or your PDA?
I’m not going to lie to you – I’ve always dreamed of seeing my name across the cover of a book. Yes, this a dream I didn’t voice to anyone until just a few years ago when I announced to the family that it was time for me to let the characters out of my head, but the dream has been in my heart forever!
Before long, I found myself joining romance writing groups online. I found critique groups – online. I found the RWA and my local RWA chapter – all online. Then, I learned that there are more opportunities to be published than just the standard NY print publishers. Yes, there are E-Books that you read either on your computer and in the palm of your hand.
How revolutionary!
I’ll admit I was skeptical. I read a few online a few years back – and wasn’t entirely impressed. But, as more and more people began to tout their viability in the marketplace and more and more authors began to share their journey and the possibility of writing “out-of-the-box” that the bigger print houses need to adhere to – I started to change my mind.
According the this article in the NY Times – reading books on your personal devices in on the rise and here to stay. Sure, it’s great to read that romance novels are a big part of the E-Book success story – but for the me the bigger picture here is that people are falling back in love with reading.
In the busy world in which we live, running here and there, longer commutes and kids that need daytimers to keep track of their busy schedules (not mine – I’m a little old fashioned that way
) – you don’t have to add the extra weight or bulk of a book. Imagine being able to switch between that horror novel, your favorite magazine and then curl up in bed with a good romance to unwind at the end of the day – all in one place!
Print books or Ebooks – do you read? How often? Any comments?
