Shameless Promotion

August 24, 2007

With school a mere 13 days away and the clock ticking on our impending move (yes, yes – I’m still packing!) I’m done being witty and entertaining for the week. If someone had told me the mortgage process would go from just damn frustrating to a colonoscopy reenactment – two months ago, I might have reconsidered going through the ordeal, but alas, it’s too late now and you all know the saying about hindsight being 20/20!

So without further ado – here’s my blatant shameless promotion:

1. Want to win a FREE book from me? My August give-away is Julia London’s The Perils of Pursuing a Prince. Go here to enter – the deadline to enter is August 31.

2. Want to read what inspired me and others to write paranormal romance? Go here.

3. Also today over at the OtherWorld Diner, we’re hosting author Shara Lanel – Check out our interview with her at the Otherworld Diner.

Have a great weekend!

Organize me – please!

August 21, 2007

Let’s start today’s post off with the latest in my long line of confessions…

I am not organized.

There I said it. My family and friends have known it for years. Have hinted at it. Okay, to be honest my family and friends have come right out and told me I’m organizationally challenged.

So what to do about it?

Here’s two tips for you today while I’m on the road to a better organized life:

First one for us Moms out there. Shoe bags. Yup, you know the one the shoe pocket organizers that go over your door? My best friend, Marie, gave me this tip. Hang one of those organizer bags over the back of closet door (I choose the door to my basement, cause it’s the most convenient) and use the pockets for the little stuff you need all the time. I’ve got school supplies (use pockets for pens, pencils, glue sticks, paperclips, index cards, erasers, etc…) The pockets are the perfect size for spare batteries, nail polish, extra shoelaces, curling ribbon for wrapping packages, tape, birthday cards you’ve bought in bulk…I could go on and on (but I won’t!) Have fun with this one – it’s a gem! Oh, and my daughter has one of these bags over the front of her closet door with barbie dolls in each pocket – wow – how organized is that?

Second one for us writer’s out there. yWriter. Free writing software that organizes your thoughts, chapters, and scenes. I just downloaded this (and it’s FREE) and have spent the morning fiddling around with it. Love it! :)

Packing, Writing and keeping the peace

August 20, 2007

Monday again? It’s rolling around quicker and quicker as the summer progresses toward the upcoming school year and our impending move.

The boxes are finally beginning to take over the garage and the living room. I haven’t packed up the kitchen since we don’t have a formal date yet, so I’m guessing I might still need to cook…

The writing has been slower than normal, I’d like to blame the boxes and the lack of sleep, but I just can’t shake the feeling that my creativity has hit a slump – okay packing and moving might the cause of that.

Summer is coming to an end and the kids have pretty much decided they don’t want to get along with each other any more – big surprise. I have to say, we’ve gone most of the summer with them being agreeable to helping me pack or disappearing with their friends when I got to psychotic for them :)

Just a reminder to check out the contest on the blog over on the right to WIN A FREE BOOK.

Real Life Reading

August 14, 2007

Do you read?

I’m not going to get started on a previous rant about the fact that you can’t call yourself a writer if you don’t read – so don’t worry. ;)

In case you haven’t noticed – we are living in the technological age. (Okay – if you’re reading my blog, I’ll accept the fact you’re probably up on your technological gadgets!) So, how does technology change your reading habits?

Do you read the paper everyday – online? Or do you still prefer to pick up and feel the newsprint beneath your fingers?

How often to you spend hours walking around the bookstore? Or do you prefer to download your favorite author’s latest book onto your phone, your E-Reader or your PDA?

I’m not going to lie to you – I’ve always dreamed of seeing my name across the cover of a book. Yes, this a dream I didn’t voice to anyone until just a few years ago when I announced to the family that it was time for me to let the characters out of my head, but the dream has been in my heart forever!

Before long, I found myself joining romance writing groups online. I found critique groups – online. I found the RWA and my local RWA chapter – all online. Then, I learned that there are more opportunities to be published than just the standard NY print publishers. Yes, there are E-Books that you read either on your computer and in the palm of your hand.

How revolutionary!

I’ll admit I was skeptical. I read a few online a few years back – and wasn’t entirely impressed. But, as more and more people began to tout their viability in the marketplace and more and more authors began to share their journey and the possibility of writing “out-of-the-box” that the bigger print houses need to adhere to – I started to change my mind.

According the this article in the NY Times – reading books on your personal devices in on the rise and here to stay. Sure, it’s great to read that romance novels are a big part of the E-Book success story – but for the me the bigger picture here is that people are falling back in love with reading.

In the busy world in which we live, running here and there, longer commutes and kids that need daytimers to keep track of their busy schedules (not mine – I’m a little old fashioned that way ;) ) – you don’t have to add the extra weight or bulk of a book. Imagine being able to switch between that horror novel, your favorite magazine and then curl up in bed with a good romance to unwind at the end of the day – all in one place!

Print books or Ebooks – do you read? How often? Any comments?

Speaking of regular print books – don’t forget to enter my contest to win Julia London’s book on the my sidebar…click the link and add your name in the comment section to be entered to win!
