When inspiration strikes

November 28, 2006

are you ready?  As a fiction writer the question most frequently asked of us is “where do you get your ideas?”

Sometimes I think the more logical question would be “how do you pick which idea to run with?” because for me, ideas and inspiration are everywhere.  The shower is a frequent hot-spot of activity – thank God for tub crayons!  Even sitting in church isn’t a safely zone to hide from creative moments, if you’ve ever seen my church bulletin – you’d think I wasn’t paying attention at all – way too much doodling that all makes sense in an odd kind of way.

I have several devices at my disposal to capture those fleeting ideas – cause you never know which one is “the one.”  I have a small digital voice recorder in my bag at all times, ready for the quick note or two.  This is perfect for those “aha” moments when the event you just witnessed is screaming – put me in your novel!  I always carry a pen and try to have paper – small notepads, used envelopes, or the back of a store receipt will work in a pinch – eyeliner works too if I can’t find my pen in the bottomless pit I call a purse.

Then I move all those little tidbits to a folder on my computer and into a small binder near my computer – so they are available to sift through when the mood strikes.  Not all these ideas will ever come to fiction fruition, but some do end up as sub-plots or interesting secondary characters.

So where does your inspiration come from – and how do you capture it for posterity?

Sweeter Romantic Notions

November 27, 2006

Monday – the beginning of a new week and I’ve finally got something to crow about.  No – I haven’t landed that big publishing contract yet – but I have been invited to join a group of talented published authors of the sweeter variety of romance in their new blog adventure.  I’m looking forward to it.

I’m off to make my first post – come on over and check out the sweeter side of romance from the people that write it.

A Little Publicity

November 25, 2006

Well, I can finally say that I’m happy with the new website.   So scoot on over and take a look.  www.DeboraDennisMills.com.

Now that the holiday week is coming to an end, I plan to jump back in first thing Monday morning and get some serious writing done.

So instead of any news from me, I’ll give you a promo for a fellow diva.
What Lies In Winter
by Cassidy Kent
ISBN-10: 1-59279-628-1 (Electronic)
ISBN-13: 978-1-59279-628-1 (Electronic)

When workaholic Hayley goes on a much-needed holiday to her favorite cabin hideaway tucked deep in the mountains of the Mammoth ski resort, she doesn’t expect to meet the beast of a man occupying her rental.

Bestselling mystery author, Nicholas Rhiordan, happens to have the same plan in mind, vacationing in his luxury cabin. He wants nothing better than to be left alone to finish his next novel, but when Hayley makes a surprise appearance, he discovers she’s hell-bent on disrupting his peaceful balance. Like any feral beast, his only recourse is to throw her out on her ass in a heap of snow and hope that she gets the hint.

When a relentless blizzard forces them to share the same quarters, their fiery personalities and equally combustible attraction could melt the ice caps off the snowy mountains. Once the storm blows over, will their connection fizzle like a snow flurry or will they pen a perfect ending?

New blog, new week

November 20, 2006

No new goals.  My progress on the WIP is slow but steady.  Thanksgiving is only a few days away,  and I need to once again work on organization and destressing.

The best way to deStress and keep my writing on target for this holiday week – is to set realistic goals.

Hubster’s off for the week.  We have family visiting from out of state and there is always the food prep that needs to get done.  I’m not going to get as much writing done as I normally would.

I accept my fate.  I accept my lack of progress for the week.  I can relax and know that I’ll have to get my butt in gear come next Monday morning…
